As I understand the case to be, independent schools in Alberta were able to join the local public board to, among other benefits, receive full per-pupil funding. Schools that remained independent receive partial funding.
One can understand that the bureaucrats would first go after schools that receive full funding, but we are all in their sights. Next they will go gunning for schools that receive partial funding, or, as in Ontario, no funding.
If we put this Alberta case beside the Trinity Western University case, it is not difficult to see in which way things are trending in the land of the brave and the fair.
Martin Niemöller's (1892–1984) poem comes to mind:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
